Editorial Policy

The standards every page on this site is held to.

What to take away

  • Primary sources first; secondary sources only where no primary exists.
  • Every figure carries a check date and the page shows it.
  • Commercial relationships never influence rankings or recommendations.

Sourcing

Tax and contribution figures come from the IRS. Social Security and Medicare figures come from the SSA and CMS. Deposit insurance comes from the FDIC and NCUA. Consumer protections come from the CFPB and FTC. Where we cite market rates, we say when they were observed, because they change weekly.

Review

Articles covering tax, insurance or investment decisions are reviewed by a credentialled professional — a CFP, CPA or CLU as appropriate — before publication. The reviewer’s name appears in the byline.

Dating and updating

Money content ages badly. Contribution limits change annually, savings rates change monthly, insurance pricing changes continuously. Every page displays the date its figures were last verified. Anything more than a year old is flagged for review.

Corrections

If we get something wrong we fix it and say so on the page. Report errors through the contact page, and include the URL and the figure in question.

Independence

Advertisers and affiliate partners have no input into editorial content, rankings or recommendations. No partner sees an article before publication. Where we earn commission we say so on the page.
