What to take away
- A score generally requires about six months of reported activity.
- A secured card is the most reliable starting point.
- One card used lightly and paid in full beats several used heavily.
- Secured card: you deposit a sum that becomes the limit. Choose one that reports to all three bureaus and refunds the deposit after a period of good history.
- Student card: designed for thin files, often with modest limits.
- Authorised user: being added to a family member’s long-standing, well-managed card can import that history.
- Credit-builder loan: payments are held in a locked account and released at the end, building payment history with no borrowing risk.
Then do the boring part
Put one small recurring charge on the card, set up autopay for the statement balance in full, and leave it alone. Keep reported utilisation low. That is the whole method.
Some services report rent and utility payments to the bureaus, which can help a thin file. Check whether the bureaus your future lender uses actually count them.
