Setting Savings Goals You Actually Reach

A goal without a monthly figure attached is a wish.

What to take away

  • Amount, date and starting balance give you the monthly figure.
  • Automate the transfer for payday so the decision is made once.
  • Name the account after the goal — it measurably reduces raiding it.

Every savings goal reduces to four variables: what you need, what you have, when you need it, and what the account pays. Fix three and the fourth is arithmetic.

When the number is uncomfortable

If the required monthly amount is unaffordable, only three things can change: the target, the date, or your cash flow. Recognising that early is more useful than starting and quietly abandoning it in month four.

Separate accounts per goal beat one pot with a mental split. The balance becomes a progress bar, and progress bars are motivating in a way a single number is not.

Common questions

Two or three funded goals plus the emergency fund is manageable. More than that and each one moves too slowly to feel like progress.
