Term vs Whole Life: A Side-by-Side Comparison

The two products answer different questions. Most people are asking the question term answers.

At a glance

Figures checked 1 Sep 2026

Typical cost Term is roughly one-tenth the cost of whole for the same face amount
Best for Term for temporary needs, permanent for needs that never end

What to take away

  • Compare on cost per dollar of death benefit first. Term wins by an order of magnitude.
  • Ask whether the need expires. If it does, term matches it; if it never does, permanent is worth pricing.
  • "Buy term and invest the difference" only works if you actually invest the difference.

The question that settles it

Does the need have an end date? Replacing income while children are at home ends. A mortgage ends. Supporting a disabled sibling does not. Settling an estate tax bill does not. Match the product to the shape of the obligation and the decision usually makes itself.

Buy term and invest the difference

The advice is sound arithmetic and unreliable behaviour. Over thirty years, the gap between a term premium and a whole life premium invested in a low-cost index fund typically ends up well ahead of the policy’s cash value. That result depends entirely on the difference actually being invested, every month, without being spent.

A reasonable compromise: buy term now with a conversion rider. It costs little, keeps the cheap coverage, and preserves the option to convert to permanent later without a fresh medical exam if your circumstances change.

Common questions

Yes, and it is common. A small permanent policy for final expenses or estate liquidity alongside a large term policy covering the working years is a reasonable structure.

Universal life adds premium flexibility and, in indexed or variable versions, market-linked crediting. It also adds complexity and the risk of the policy underperforming its illustration. The same core question — does the need expire — still applies.
